Central Bitumen Processing Facility
A central bitumen processing facility features boilers to generate steam that is injected into the reservoir to heat the bitumen. The bitumen, water and small amounts of gas produced from the reservoir are sent to the central processing facility to be separated. The small amount of gas separated from the bitumen is burned, along with purchased natural gas, as fuel to generate steam. There are also facilities to clean and treat the produced water so that it can be re-used to generate steam. The process used allows about 95 per cent of the water to be recycled. Slightly salty or “brackish”, non-potable formation water is the primary source of “makeup” water. The waste produced during the water recycling process is sent to an offsite waste disposal facility. The produced bitumen is pipelined to markets.
